33 Contemporary West Coast Swing Songs You Should Already Have

West Coast Swing music by definition keeps up with the songs of the times.  That said, a case could be made that just about every top 40 song within our BPM range is a contemporary swing song.  I happen to disagree.  I feel that some songs just dance better.  Even when there is no swing beat, certain rhythm patterns in the music just feel better when you dance.

I think the best way to learn which patterns these are are to listen to the contemporary songs that have become modern west coast swing “classics.”  These are the songs that have inscribed themselves into the “West coast swing music iConsciousness(tm)”  in the last few years.

Many of these songs gained their induction into the west coast swing community through a particular routine, competition or epic social dance.   From there they managed to earn their places as frequently requested songs on every DJs playlist.

These songs may no longer be as popular as when they came out, but while they were in their prime, every west coast swing DJ had to have this music or or risk losing relevancy.

That said, I’ve limited myself to 33 contemporary songs, and am going to try to stick to the Pop genre and songs to hit the scene in the last few years.  I am saving R&B for it’s own list.  I know I’m going to miss a lot, so I’m sure I’ll be writing a few installments of this topic in the future.  In the case of artists like Ne-Yo who has a multitude of hits, I’ll select one or two songs and the rest will come in future west coast swing music lists.  Also, please feel free to share your favorite songs in the comments!
